ABOUT THE EVENT

We have a rare opportunity to experience the 

Outdoor Series - 5 classes 

on various aspects of a safe wilderness experience put on by community member, Jerry Fochler.

Class times are - 6:30 to 8:30 pm

Cost is:

$20 per class or

$80 for all 5 in the series

The Outdoor Series includes;

Thursday, April 13 - Being prepared and safe

Footwear and clothing choices, bringing necessary extras, planning, establishing safety protocol, safety devices, using poles, trail etiquette, minimal impact,  Max class size 12 people.  This is an indoor session.

Thursday, April 20 - Understanding Map, Compass and GPS

Map legends, scale, contour lines, UTM and latitude and longitude grids, compass basics, finding yourself on a map, what do all those numbers mean, how map, compass and GPS work together.  Max class size 12 people.  This is an indoor hands-on session.  Bring your own compass and GPS if you have one.

Thursday, April 27 - Outdoor meal prep and cooking

Safe use of basic backpacking stoves, water purification, dehydrated meals, making your own lightweight meals, sampling backpack foods,

Max class size 14 people.  This is an outdoor session.

Thursday, May 4 - Basic first aid and survival

Basic life support, bleeding, first aid supplies, what can go wrong, Common hiking injuries – FOOSH, blisters, ankle injuries, environmental concerns such as bee stings, spider bites, poison ivy, heat stroke, hypothermia.

Max size 12.  Depending on weather this session could be indoor or out.  Wear comfortable clothes for laying and/or sitting on the ground/floor.

Thursday, May 11 - Common tree, shrub and plant identification

Drive to a nearby location and do a short walk while identifying the key characteristics of many of the common trees, shrubs and plants, What’s edible, what’s poisonous, what’s medicinal.

The location is the North Westside Community Library at 516 Udell Road, right behind the Killiney Firehall.

Come join in and gain valuable knowledge to keep you safe while enjoying our beautiful wilderness areas!
